PERC – a clean, bright and versatile source of neutron decay products — •Bastian Märkisch — Physikalisches Institut, Universität Heidelberg — Institut Laue-Langevin, Grenoble

We present the PERC facility, a new beam station which at its exit delivers not neutrons but an intense beam of neutron decay products under well defined conditions. A gain in phase space density of several orders of magnitude can be achieved with PERC, as compared to existing neutron decay spectrometers. Spectra and angular distributions of the emerging electrons and protons will be distortion- and background-free on the level of 10−4, more than 10 times better than that achieved today. PERC is under development by an international collaboration and will permit improved measurements of parameters of the Standard Model as well as novel searches for physics beyond.
