Precision Spectroscopy of Mg+ Cooling Transitions — •Valentin Batteiger, Maximilian Herrmann, Sebastian Knünz, Guido Saathoff, Theodor W. Hänsch, and Thomas Udem — Max-Planck-Institut für Quantenoptik, Garching, Germany

Precision spectroscopy of dipole allowed transitions in trapped ions is plagued by temperature changes induced by the scanning laser. To circumvent this problem we probe single, sympathetically cooled ions [1]. Final results of an isotope shift measurement on the Mg+ D1 and D2 line are presented [2], we also discuss a current attempt to infer the upper state lifetime from the lineshape of the ion’s fluorescence spectrum.
