A plurality of industrial processes involves the treatment of volatile organic compounds, VOC. They are input product or part of the exhaust gas streams. Because of the toxicological properties some of them have they must not be freed into the environment. A contaminated gas stream has therefore been to be cleaned. This contribution reports a VOC destruction method based on a new approach introduced by Whitehead and co-workers. They used a serial combination of several active stages. One stage consists of two stainless steel grid shaped electrodes filled with glass beads. The VOC contaminated gas flows perpendicular to the electrodes. Harling [1] has been able to demonstrate that the VOC destruction rate of such an arrangement increased nonlinear compared to a parallel arrangement of the same number of stages. This phenomenon has been investigated. For this reason the dependency of the destruction rate on the initial concentration of the test VOC ethylene, the number of active stages, the surface structure and the resulting creation rate of by-products has been investigated using a single layer stage. The composition of the input and output gas flow has been identified and quantified using FTIR- and TDL absorption spectroscopy. The main products detected have been CO, CO2, H2CO and H2CO2.
