Plasma polymerized ethylenediamine (PPEDA) thin films (15-80 nm) were deposited on different biomedical substrates relevant to endoprosthesis by means of low pressure capacitively coupled 13.56 MHz plasma. The plane samples for the cell adhesion tests consist of titanium alloy with a diameter of 11 mm and a thickness of 2 mm. The substrates have a roughness Ra of 20 µm which is typical for hip joint endoprosthesis. Additionally, a stick with the length of 150 mm and diameter of 12 mm is used for abrasion tests. The plasma processing parameters (plasma power, gas mixture, pressure, continuous and pulsed plasma operation) were studied for the optimization of PPEDA thin film properties concerning the cell adhesion. The human osteoblastic cells MG-63 (ATCC) were used, cultivated in DMEM at 37 C and 5 % CO2. While the initial cell adhesion (10 min) on PPEDA thin films deposited in the continuous plasma operation is similar to uncoated samples, the adhesion is significantly enhanced on PPEDA films deposited in pulsed mode operation. The investigations were realized within the BMBF collaborative research project ”Campus PlasmaMed”, grant no 13N9774.
