A cold intermittent DC Corona Discharge Plasma for antimicrobial treatment of microscopic cavities.René Bussiahn, •Torsten Gerling, and Eckhard Kindel — INP Greifswald, Felix-Hausdorff-Str. 2

A new atmospheric pressure plasma source for biological and medical applications has been developed. Plasma lengths of several millimetres with a typical diameter of 30 µ m make this discharge particularly suitable for the treatment of microscopic cavities. The discharge is driven by a high-voltage DC power supply and uses argon as working gas. The device has been characterized in terms of its U-I-characteristics and space-resolved spectral output in the VUV, UV/VIS and NIR range with regard to discharge voltage, electrode distance and gas-admixtures of nitrogen, oxygen or air. The anti-microbial efficiency has been demonstrated by exposing E. Coli or Staphylococcus aureus colonized Agar plates to the discharge.
