Nitrogen oxides (NOx = NO + NO2) are important pollutants in the troposphere. They are mainly emitted by combustion processes but also have natural sources. Measurements of nitrogen oxides are performed routinely with in-situ instrumentation in local and national air pollution networks. These data sets provide high accuracy and 24 hour coverage but only close to the surface and at a limited number of locations. Satellite observations of NO2 from instruments such as GOME, SCIAMACHY or OMI on the other hand provide global coverage but at limited spatial and temporal resolution. Even more importantly, the quantities observed (local mixing ratios at the surface versus integrated tropospheric columns) cannot be directly compared. Ground-based multi-axis DOAS observations (MAX-DOAS) can be used to bridge the gap between the two measurement types. When profiling algorithms are applied to the observations they provide both quantities, the tropospheric column and an estimate of the surface concentration. In this paper, data from the CINDI (Cabauw Intercomparison of Nitrogen Dioxide Measuring Instruments) campaign performed in Cabauw, the Netherlands in June/July 2009 are used to investigate the consistency between ground-based in situ (in different altitudes), MAX-DOAS and satellite observations.
