Large polynuclear complexes which contain transition metal and/or rare earth metal ions are of current interest due to their tunable magnetic properties and the possibility to act as single molecule magnets (SMM). The use of SMMs for information technology (e.g. molecular memory arrays) is a main target in the field of molecular spintronics. Simplest inorganic Systems, that show SMM behaviour like for example the ferric star FeIII[FeIII(L1)2]3 have attracted much interest, since they can be investigated as model systems.
We investigated the ferric star with different X-ray spectroscopic techniques. The experimental results obtained by different groups using different methods will be compared and discussed.
