Ballistic Missile Defense in Europe - How does it look like and how to cooperate with Russia? — •Götz Neuneck — IFSH, Hamburg, Germany

During the Lisbon Summit NATO leaders decided to develop the capability to defend our populations and territories against ballistic missile attack but missed to specify technical as well as financial details. It is believed that the future territorial defense system will adopt the US sea- and land-based Aegis BMD system which consists of Standard-Missile 3 interceptors, forward based radars and space-based early warning. Russia is invited to cooperate with NATO countries on missile defense. Despite much criticism from the scientific community about the maturity of the hit-to-kill technology and many other open questions (about the costs, command & control and arms control implications etc.) NATO decided to continue with such an ambitious program. The talk will analyses the current configuration and tries to outline possible cooperation with Russia.
