Polysterene (PS) spheres of a narrow size distribution were synthesized by mini-emulsion polymerization. Films (1 - 10 µm) of densely packed PS spheres were prepared from suspensions of the spheres on fluorine-doped tin oxide films on a carrier substrate. Macroporous ZnO films were electrodeposited into the free space between the polystyrene spheres. The PS template was removed by solvent or UV treatment leaving behind the macroporous ZnO matrix. In a subsequent deposition step, additional ZnO was electrodeposited into the macropores this time, however, using a molecular template and hence forming mesoporous ZnO filling the space which ad been occupied by the PS spheres before. The films were characterized and their applicability as hierarchical structures in dye-sensitized solar cells will be discussed.
