Small angle neutron scattering of vortex structures in superconductors and chiral magnets — •Sebastian Mühlbauer — Physik-Department, TechnischeUniversität München, D-85748 Garching, Germany

Small angle neutron scattering is a unique probe of large scale textures in superconductors and magnetic materials. SANS studies in ultra-pure Nb allowed us to unravel the origin and nature of the morphology of the flux line lattice [1]. Using a stroboscopic SANS technique is has been possible for the first time to track the rigidity of the superconducting flux lines at the interior of a bulk superconductor [2]. This opens new avenues how to explore superconducting flux line matter and related magnetic structures. In fact, using SANS we have also identified a new form of magnetic order composed of spin vortices, so-called skyrmions, in MnSi and other B20 compounds [3]. A rigorous account of this state shows that it is stabilized by thermal fluctuations. The identification of the skyrmion lattice sets the stage for the current induced motion of the skymrion lattice at ultra-low current densities [4], which is akin to the current induced flux lattice motion in superconductors.
