Theoretical calculations [1] predict nitrogen-doped MgO being a ferromagnetic half metal. Therefore we investigated MgO1−xNx films on Mo(001) by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS) at room temperature. The films were prepared by evaporation of magnesium in oxygen/nitrogen atmosphere. A concentration of up to x=6 % has been achieved in films up to 11 monolayers. Similarities and differences of pristine MgO and MgO1−xNx were observed by STM. The electronic structure measured by STS differs in a significant way, showing additional states appearing in the band gap of MgO. The influence of the Mo substrate taking affect as a catalizer for N-dissociation is discussed as well as possible solutions in order to prepare N-doped MgO bulk for further magnetic investigations.
