Monte Carlo generator tuning at the LHC — •Holger Schulz — Inst. f. Physik, Humboldt University Berlin, Berlin, Germany

Already the early data taken at the LHC allowed to measure precisely the characteristics of minimum bias events and the properties of the so-called underlying event hard-scattering processes at 900 GeV and 7 TeV center-of-mass-energies. The simulation of these low energetic QCD processes, relevant for subsequent LHC data analyses, in Monte Carlo (MC) generators through parametric models needs a systematic tuning of these model parameters to these new data.

An overview of generator tuning activities at the LHC will be presented with focus on systematic tunings performed with the PROFESSOR (PROcedure For Estimating SyStematic errORs) tool inside the ATLAS collaboration. It will be shown how fruitful the turn-around from data-taking to new tunings can be, both for improving Monte Carlo generator descriptions (where possible) but also for disqualifying those models incapable of describing e.g. Tevatron and LHC data at the same time.
