The OPERA long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment, situated at the Gran Sasso underground laboratory LNGS, has been designed for the first direct detection of νµ→ ντ oscillations in the nearly pure high-energy νµ CNGS beam created at CERN.
The detector is a hybrid apparatus, consisting of a lead/photo emulsion target, equipped with electronic detectors. Data aqcuisition started in 2008, and the detector has been running since, recording numerous beam-induced events.
The detection of ντ appearance takes place via the creation of τ leptons in charged current interactions and their subsequent decay. The topology and kinematics of the first ντ charged current candidate event shall be presented in detail.
