Development of a Micromegas Based Muon Tracking System — •Jonathan Bortfeldt, Otmar Biebel, David Heereman, and Ralf Hertenberger — LS-Schaile, LMU München

A muon tracking system, consisting of 90×100 mm2 large bulk Micromegas with 360 strips and an amplification gap of 128 µm has been developed. Four of these detectors are foreseen for tracking of 140 GeV muons at the H8 beamline at CERN with a rate of up to 10 kHz and an overall resolution below 40 µm. Signal studies have been performed by recording cosmic muon and 5.9 keV X-ray signals from a single charge sensitive preamplifier at several gas mixtures of Ar:CO2. A fast Gassiplex based strip readout has been adapted for readout of 1080 strips.

We report on the behavior of a three Micromegas system and introduce a model for signal formation in Micromegas. A FWHM energy resolution of 23% at 5.9 keV X-rays, efficiencies of up to 99%, and a spatial resolution of (62±6) µm limited by multiple scattering was observed for cosmic muons. Larger detectors with an active area of 0.5 m2 and more are under development for cosmic muon tracking in high n or γ background environments at the Munich tandem accelerator and the GIF (Gamma Irradiation Facility) at CERN.
