Characterization of a test box for SiPM — •Chen Xu, Erika Garruti, Allesandro Silenzi, and Martin Goettlich — Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron DESY, Hamburg, Germany

A test box has been developed for the characterization of silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) with the aim to be provided as a tool for university laboratory courses The system comprises of a light-tight box hosting one 1×1 mm2 SiPM from Hammamatsu (MPPC); one high voltage with temperature regulation feedback module controlled by USB port; one LED system with USB controlled pulser and direct light readout via a PIN diode, optically connected to the MPPC via a light guide; a readout circuit and data acquisition system. The system is scalable up to 8 channels and provides measurements of charge and time of the SiPM signal. The system was designed to be reasonable priced, light weighted and easily transportable. The SiPM gain dependency on voltage and temperature were studied with automatic scans of the bias voltage and automatic temperature logging. Fundamental mathematical approaches in signal processing, like FFT, were involved during data analysis. This box can be also used to evaluate the performance of a scintillation detection system.
