Luminosity measurements at LHCb using beam-gas interactions — •Colin Barschel — CERN, CH-1211 Genève 23, Switzerland

The LHCb experiment uses a novel technique(1) to measure the absolute luminosity at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) by using beam-gas interactions. The beam-gas interaction vertices reconstructed with the LHCb vertex locator (VELO) are used to measure the shapes, offsets and angles of both beams to provide a direct luminosity measurement. This method was used in addition to the well-known "van der Meer scan" method (VDM) and can be performed either parasitically during a physics fill or can be used as an additional constraint during a van der Meer scan. The beam-gas imaging method has been successfully used for the first time in 2009(2) at a center of mass energy of 0.9 TeV and is part of the standard LHCb luminosity measurement.

This talk presents the beam-gas method to measure the luminosity and shows the results for the 2009 and 2010 LHC run together with the VDM results. In addition a proposed gas injection system to increase the beam-gas interaction rate is presented.
