Neutrino Masses and Mixings: A Hint at Flavor Symmetries — •Claudia Hagedorn — INFN-Sezione di Padova, Padua, Italy

Neutrinos are responsible for some of the biggest surprises in the field of particle physics in the last years. Their masses are much smaller than those of all the other known elementary particles and their mass hierarchy is milder than among charged fermion masses. Even more striking is the mixing pattern observed among leptons with two large and one possibly vanishing mixing angles. This is not only completely different from the mixing pattern of quarks, but it is also compatible with specific patterns, such as mu-tau symmetric or tri-bimaximal mixing. The latter patterns are naturally predicted in models with (discrete non-abelian) flavor symmetries, acting on the space spanned by the three generations of elementary particles. In this talk I give a couple of examples of models realizing this idea and discuss some of their further phenomenological imprints apart from neutrino masses and mixings.
