diagnostics of femtosecond-long, low-charge electron bunches at REGAE — •shima bayesteh1 and hossein delsim-hashemi21Hamburg University-DESY, Hamburg,Germany — 2DESY, Hamburg, Germany

A new Linac is under construction at DESY as the electron source for Relativistic Electron Gun for Atomic Exploration (REGAE). REGAE is a Femtosecond Electron Diffraction (FED) experiment that has the potential to directly observe the most venerable concepts in chemistry and biology most notably enabling a direct atomic level view of transition states. The relevant motions for this barrier-crossing event occur on the sub-hundred femtosecond time-scale. REGAE would provide extremely high quality pC-charge electron bunches of few femtosecond length for FED. It comprises a photo-cathode gun with normal conducting 1.5 cell RF cavity. REGAE will operate in the electron energy range of 2-5 MeV. Scintillator screens are used for diagnostics of transverse profile. The idea is based on the most efficient collection of light after the screen. The transported light will be detected by a specially designed ICCD. This technique of diagnostics potentially can be considered for ultra-low charge Free Electron Lasers (FELs).
