The photofission program at the superconducting Darmstadt electron linear accelerator S-DALINAC aims at the investigation of parity non-conservation (PNC) using circularly polarized bremsstrahlung, as well as the study of fission properties. In a first test experiment with an unpolarized beam a twin Frisch grid ionization chamber was used to study fragment mass and total kinetic energy distributions from 238U and 234U. The results show that the experimental setup provides excellent conditions for photofission studies. With respect to a PNC experiment, however, the achievable luminosity is too small. A possible solution may be an active gas target. As a first step to such a device we are undertaking experimental investigations of UF6 with respect to counting gas properties. Status and outlook of the different aspects of the S-DALINAC photofission program will be presented.

Supported by DFG through SFB634, through the TU Darmstadt-GSI cooperation contract, and by the state of Hesse through the LOEWE center HIC for FAIR.
