Low-Noise JFET-CMOS Preamplifiers for the GERDA Experiment — •Andrea Kirsch, Lisa Gamer, Jeschua Geist, Thomas Kihm, and Bernhard Schwingenheuer — MPI für Kernphysik, Saupfercheckweg 1, 69117 Heidelberg

The neutrinoless double beta decay represents one of the most promising approaches to investigate the nature of massive neutrinos. According to theory, its existence would not only prove the neutrino to be a Majorana particle but also allow a direct measurement of the effective neutrino mass by the half-life of the decay.

Therefore the GERDA project aims to search for the 0νββ decay of Ge-76 by using isotopically enriched germanium crystals as source and detector simultaneously. The whole experiment, including the front-end electronic devices such as low-noise charge sensitive preamplifiers for the readout of the detector signal, is operated in liquid argon at cryogenic temperatures. With regard to the best possible energy resolution different setups of integrated JFET-CMOS preamplifiers have been tested at room temperature as well as at 77 K. A summary of the physics of the used electronic assemblies is given and will be followed by a discussion of the respective performance of the investigated transistors. Last but not least, the achieved energy resolution of the different setups will be presented along with an evaluation of the obtained data and their relevance for the GERDA experiment.
