Performance of the HADES electromagnetic calorimeter — •Kirill Lapidus — Excellence Cluster “Universe”, TU München, Boltzmannstr. 2, 85748 Garching, Germany

The High Acceptance Di-Electron Spectrometer (HADES) is a multipurpose detector, which provides a very good charged particle reconstruction. It is planned to extend particle identification capabilities of the HADES setup with the installation of an electromagnetic calorimeter.

The calorimeter will allow to reconstruct pseudoscalar mesons (π0, η) via their decay into two photons. Another important function of the calorimeter is to improve the lepton-pion separation at high values of particle momenta (p > 0.5 GeV/c).

For the construction of the calorimeter, lead-glass blocks from the end-cap calorimeter of the former OPAL experiment will be employed. In total, ∼900 blocks will be arranged in six sectors.

In order to investigate the functionality of the proposed design, a dedicated simulation software was developed, making use of a combination of the GEANT3 package and the external Cherenkov photon transport code. Algorithms for the photon reconstruction and the lepton-pion discrimination were developed as well. The obtained results for the calorimeter performance in heavy-ion collisions and in elementary reactions will be presented, on the base of some selected physics cases.
