Let the machines do. How intelligent is artificial intelligence? — •Hans-Dieter Burkhard — Institut für Informatik, Humboldt University Berlin, 10099 Berlin

Twenty years ago, it was common understanding that artificial intelligence has failed to achieve its goals, and its usefulness was assessed as moderate. Meanwhile, a lot of new methods have been developed, and "intelligent assistance" by artifacts is present everywhere. Even decisions on the battlefield are more and more transferred to machines. Actually, this not as new as one might think. But is this technique mature enough to replace human decision-making? Especially, perception appears to be a hard problem for technical equipment. How accurate, how safe can decisions be in the case of incomplete and unreliable data? The presentation gives some overview about recent developments in artificial intelligence and robotics, its capabilities and its serious problems from a general point of view.
