In hybrid solar cells the charge transfer between nanoparticles and conducting polymers at the donor/acceptor interface is influenced by the position of energy levels of donor and acceptor. Thus for the development of efficient solar cells it is crucial to be able to determine and control the band gap and band edge positions of donor and acceptor materials. In particular the absolute position of HOMO and LUMO levels are important. Because these band edge positions are in case of nanoparticles size-dependent, a method to estimate these positions and to relate them to the energy levels of conducting polymers is needed. One suitable method to characterize those materials is cyclic voltammetry. With this electrochemical method it is possible to detect the absolute values of the energetic positions of the HOMO and LUMO as well as non-radiative defect states with respect to the vacuum level. We present cyclic voltammetric measurements of CuInS2 and ZnO nanoparticles which can be used as an acceptor material in hybrid solar cells. In addition measurements on poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and Phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) were done to provide electronic structures of relevant materials for hybrid as well as for organic solar cells. The measurements were done on thin films processed from solution by spin-coating.
