Nano-photonic devices based on quantum optical effects at the single-emitter and single-photon level are promising for integrated quantum technology [1]. In particular, photonic crystal cavities attracted intense research effort, as the electromagnetic field is strongly localized and the interaction with incorporated emitters is strongly enhanced. However, the transition frequency of solid-state quantum emitters typically exhibits a strong temperature dependence. Thus, a precise thermometer to monitor and control the local temperature close to the emitter is needed. We demonstrate how higher order modes in photonic crystal cavities can be used to tackle this problem. As a side-effect the method can be used to measure the refractive index of semiconductors in a wide temperature and wavelength range.
