Synthesis and characterisation of BaTiO3 nanopowders and CoFe2O4/BaTiO3 nanocomposites — •Yanling Gao, Morad Etier, and Doru C. Lupascu — Institute for Materials Science, University Duisburg-Essen, Universitätsstrasse 15, 45141 Essen, Germany

Multiferroic materials have drawn much attention, because they display the coexistence of ferroelectric and magnetic properties. In this study, we have succeeded in the synthesis and characterization of the BaTiO3 nanocrystals by the low cost and straightforward auto-combustion process of amorphous organic precursor. In the following, CoFe2O4/BaTiO3 nanocomposites with core/shell structures were also obtained by using this process. The particles are systematically characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), thermogravimetric, differential thermal analyses (TGA/DTA), and infrared spectroscopy (IR). The XRD results confirm the presence of both the spinel and the perovskite phases. The SEM-EDX and the atomic force microscopy (AFM) micrographs of CoFe2O4/BaTiO3 show two-phase composite nanostructures of a cobalt ferrite core coated with a BaTiO3 shell. The weight fraction of CoFe2O4 and the size of nanocomposites are the keys to the dielectric and magnetic properties of CoFe2O4/BaTiO3 nanocomposites.
