Plasmonic nanoparticle arrays are interesting building blocks for optical sensors. For their integration into devices one may wish to modify their geometry locally within an array to tune the surface plasmon resonance in certain array sections. We present a method to induce local particle growth by exposure of lithographically fabricated Au-nanoparticle arrays to a HAuCl4 solution. Illumination of the system activates the gold ions in solution, whereas the nanoparticles act as seeds and induce particle growth. We monitor the modification via the shift of the plasmon resonance wavelength. For discoidal particles a growth preferentially perpendicular to the array plane is obtained resulting in a blue-shifted resonance. These findings are supported by AFM and SEM measurements and simulations.
