Solar2Fuel: ATR-IR-Spectroscopic characterization of functionalized semiconductor surfaces for photocatalytic reduction of CO2 — •Leo Pöttinger1 and Thomas Bürgi21Physikalisch-Chemisches Institut, Universität Heidelberg, Im Neuenheimer Feld 253, 69120 Heidelberg — 2Département de Chimie Physique Université de Genève, 30 Quai Ernest-Ansermet CH-1211 Genève 4

The handling of CO2 produced by industrial installations and power plants has become a very important environmental issue nowadays because of it’s generally accepted impact on the green house effect. In this context, storage of CO2 or its conversation to fuel or useful chemicals are highly desirable. Along these lines, the Solar2Fuel project, funded by German BMBF (13N11793), aims on photocatalytic conversion of CO2 to methanol with a sufficient quantum efficiency to make an industrial realization of the process profitable. As the basic catalytic system, semiconductor nanoparticle powder coatings are used. These particles are functionalized with dye molecules to promote the photocatalytic reaction and to move the absorption spectrum from UV to the visible range. ATR-IR-Spectroscopy during adsorption of different dyes and CO2 on the nanoparticles is performed, as well as the reaction upon visible light irradiation.
