With the help of a periodic array of cavities, nanoparticles in solution can be separated and arranged. Arrays of cavities in the micrometer range were created in a thin layer of PMMA on a silicon substrate via EBL. A drop of solution containing nanoparticles, such as polystyrene-latex, Au and SiO2 in the range of (300 ... 500) nm were deposited onto the array. During the evaporation of the drop the nanoparticles are shoved into the cavities by the meniscus-force. Since the meniscus-force is dependent on the contact angle, different surfactants were added to the solution. The approach of evaporating a thin film of metal on top of the structure was also used to manipulate the contact angle. A characterization of the particles inside the cavities was carried out via SEM and Raman mapping.
