Measuring Associated Production of a b-jet and a Z-boson using ATLAS detector — •Rohin Narayan — Institute of Physics, University of Heidelberg

Many new particles predicted by theories beyond the Standard Model of particle physics decay into jets and electroweak gauge bosons, W and Z. The search and study of these particles therefore require a very good understanding of the associated production of W/Z bosons and jets. In particular the associated production of a b-jet and a Z-boson is a dominant background for standard model Higgs searches.

The cross section for this process could also be used to measure the gluon distribution of the proton. Since the b-quark distribution is derived perturbatively from gluon distribution function a precise cross section measurement could constrain the gluon distribution of the proton.

First results of a measurement of associated production of a b-jet with a Z boson is presented along with various methods of tagging b-hadrons.
