Can we measure charge at the Semiconductor Tracker, ATLAS detector ? — •Madalina Stanescu-Bellu — DESY, Zeuthen, Germany

Within the Inner Detector, ID, of the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider, there is the Silicon Strips Detector (Semiconductor Tracker, SCT), which provides precise momentum resolution, but not dE/dx measurements. Therefore, we try to see if we can reconstruct inside the SCT the dE/dx values from the limited Time-Over-Threshold information and the number of strips in a cluster, and compare the results with the better resolution dE/dx reconstructed in the Pixel detector, another subsystem of the ID. The analysis uses data recorded in 2010, with 7 TeV center-of-mass energy and minimum bias events. The first results are very encouraging, however, measuring dE/dx in a strip detector is still speculative. The long term goal is to track changes in the collected charge and not to do particle identification.
