To operate accelerating structures with a high duty cycle up to CW operation, while maintaining high average acceleration gradients above 107 V/m, superconducting RF technology is necessary. At this power levels, the cavity surface needs to be smooth to prevent field emission and RF breakdown.

To design such cavities, elliptical cavity profiles have been used for three decades. While it is feasible to reach high performance levels with elliptical cavity structures, there is no physical reason why elliptical cavities should outperform other, yet unconsidered cavity profiles of similar smoothness.

An alternative approach to cavity profiles based on Bezier spline curves is presented. Three figures of merit for base cell optimization (Epk/Eacc, intercell coupling constant, Rsh / Q) are discussed and visualized for a cubic Bezier curve, which has two less free parameters for a given iris radius and frequency in comparison to elliptical profiles. By comparison with equivalent common elliptical profiles, it is shown that equal optimization goals can be reached with the cubic spline profile.

Further extensions of this approach using the degree-elevation property to increase the number of parameters, e.g. for approximating a free-form optimized half-cell profile, are shown.
