Transverse Deflecting Structure for longitudinal phase space measurements at PITZ — •Dmitriy Malyutin, Mikhail Krasilnikov, and Frank Stephan — DESY, 15738 Zeuthen, Germany

The main goal of the Photo Injector Test facility at DESY, Zeuthen site, (PITZ) is the development, optimization and detailed characterization of electron sources for short wavelength Free Electron Lasers (FELs) like FLASH and the European XFEL. For successful operation of such type of FELs the injector must provide high quality electron bunches, enough short in duration with high charge and small transverse and longitudinal emittance values. Installation of the Transverse Deflecting Structure (TDS) at PITZ will provide the possibility for detailed characterization of the bunch temporal profile, bunch transverse slice emittance and longitudinal phase space. The TDS cavity is currently installed at the PITZ beamline, and commissioning of the whole TDS system is expected in the spring 2012.

In the first part of the talk the PITZ 2.0 beam line setup will be described. Major changes from the previous setup were the installation of the TDS cavity and a new dispersive section. In the second part of the talk the basic principles of the TDS deflector will be described. Simulations of measurements performed with the TDS cavity will be presented. The temporal resolution for different types of measurements will be discussed. Systematic limitations will be estimated.
