Search for cascade events in the IC59 IceCube dataset (2009/2010) — •Arne Schönwald — DESY Zeuthen

IceCube is a neutrino detector at South pole whose construction has been completed in the end of 2010. It has an instrumented volume of 1 km3 and consists of 5160 digital optical modules, which measure the Cherenkov light emitted by charged particles traveling through the ice.

This analysis searches for interactions of astrophysical neutrinos that produce electromagnetic and hadronic particle showers in the IceCube 2009/2010 dataset. Such events have a spherical light pattern in contrast to the track-like light pattern of muons from cosmic-ray interactions with the atmosphere that form the dominant background for this analysis. The advantage of this so called “cascade” channel is that it is sensitive to all neutrino flavours, has a 4π acceptance and a good energy resolution.

The status of the analysis will be presented.
