We report on the efficiency of relativistic surface high harmonic generation(SHHG) that is measured in experiments and compare it to the established theory and to numerical simulations. A strong influence of the plasma scale length on the efficiency was found, which can be controlled by an adequate enhancement of the laser pulse contrast using a plasma mirror or second harmonic generation.This is explained theoretically by making the transition from a sharp plasma edge to an expanded density distribution with a finite plasma scale length. Notwithstanding that the harmonic emission is enhanced using an optimized scale length, the measured efficiency is below the expectations. We record XUV pulse energies in the µJ range and efficiencies of ≈10−6. Hence, relativistic SHHG has been realized at a repetition rate of 10 Hz for the first time.
