Studies of pure electron plasmas and partially neutralized plasmas in the CNT stellarator — •Thomas S. Pedersen, Xabier Sarasola, and Eric Winkler — Max-Planck Institute for Plasma Physics, Garching and Greifswald, Germany

Non-neutral plasmas have been studied primarily in Penning traps in the past, but toroidal magnetic configurations are also of interest, and allow studies of partially neutralized plasmas, and potentially also electron-positron plasmas. The physics of partially neutralized plasmas is a largely unexplored area of plasma physics. Such plasmas have now been created and studied in the Columbia Non-neutral Torus (CNT), a two-period stellarator devoted to studies of non-neutral plasmas and electron-positron plasmas. Plasmas with any degree of neutralization can be created in steady state, and the whole range from pure electron plasma to quasi-neutral electron-ion plasma has been explored. As one varies the degree of neutralization, the plasma behavior changes significantly. Another recent result is that it is now possible to create pure electron plasmas without internal objects. This is an important step toward creation of the first electron-positron plasma on Earth. In addition to results from CNT, a brief overview of the plans for the electron-positron plasma experiment APEX will be presented.
