A novel path integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) approach for correlated many-particle systems with arbitrary pair interaction in continuous space at finite temperatures is presented [1,2]. It is based on a representation of the N-particle density operator in a basis of (anti-)symmetrized N-particle states (configurations of occupation numbers). Formally exact expressions for the thermodynamic quantities are obtained by a transition from discrete to continuous imaginary time representation [3]. The method is applied to degenerate, correlated fermions in a two dimensional trap. The efficiency of the method (fermion sign problem) is investigated for a broad range of temperatures, coupling parameters and particle numbers and compared to a standard path integral Monte Carlo method and an exact diagonalization method.
