Numerical Simulation of Flux Rope Dynamics — •Thomas Tacke1, Jürgen Dreher1, and Richard D. Sydora21Institut für Theoretische Physik I, Ruhr-Universität Bochum — 2University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada

Numerical simulations using an MHD model are made in close cooperation with a magnetized pulsed plasma experiment to investigate the evolution of arch-shaped magnetic flux ropes. Using a force-free coronal loop model by Titov and Demoulin, a kink mode can develop under non-equilibrium conditions. The development and growth rates of these kink modes are investigated. In a changed magnetic field configuration, the flux rope can expand due to the hoop force. The influence of the magnetic field configuration on the expansion velocity is investigated. The variation of the magnetic field strength allows a systematic study of the expansion velocity of the unstable flux rope and an comparison to the experimental observations. The influence of resistivity on the flux rope evolution and structure is also systematically studied to bring the simulation closer to laboratory conditions.
