Pollution control using an atmospheric packed-bed reactor: Plasma surface interaction and species conversion — •Marko Hübner1, Olivier Guaitella2, Antoine Rousseau2, and Jürgen Röpcke11INP Greifswald, Felix-Hausdorff-Str. 2, D-17489 Greifswald, Germany — 2LPP, Ecole Polytechnique, CNRS, 91128 Palaiseau Cedex, France

Over the last decade environmental concerns have increased research activities of pollution destruction using packed-bed reactors. The embedment of dielectric material into the volume can lead to heterogenic catalysis between active sizes on the surface and gas fragments i.e. catalyzed plasma reactions at surfaces. Those processes are influenced by the spatial appearance of the active plasma region close to the surface. The gas fragments have to reach the surface before volume reactions, in particular collisions, can take place. Therefore, the dimension of the active plasma volume should be in order of the mean free path. For several electrode configurations, the appearance of the discharge has been studied using optical imaging techniques. The results show, that the dimension of the discharge region is significantly influenced by the shape of the electrodes. As an example, the destruction of ethylene and toluene in a multi stage packed-bed reactor has been studied in detail. The gas composition has been identified and quantified using IR absorption spectroscopy. The formation of up to 10 by-products, the destruction rate, the carbon balance and the influence of the number of active stages has been analyzed.
