Phase-space contraction and attractors for ultra-relativistic electrons — •Götz Lehmann and Karl-Heinz Spatschek — Heinrich-Heine Universität, 40225 Düsseldorf

Ultra-short laser pulses today may reach intensities of about 1022  W/cm2. The motion of electrons in such extreme fields becomes ultra-relativistic and will be accompanied by bremsstrahlung. The emittance of radiation is cause of a dissipative effect which is called radiation reaction force [1]. It has been shown previously that the radiation reaction force causes phase-space contraction when motion of electrons in the laser field is considered [2]. First, we confirm that electrons moving in the same direction as the plane wave are affected less, compared to counter-propagation. Second, we demonstrate, that in the case of two colliding laser beams, when stochastic heating can occur, radiation reaction will cause attractors in phase-space. In certain parameter regimes, electron motion converges on regular attractors and stochastic heating becomes obsolete . We present the general form of the attractors and provide quantitative results for the speed of phase-space contraction as well as the type of attracted motion [3].
