Pseudorapidity density of charged particles in p–Pb collisions at sNN = 5.02 TeV measured with ALICE at the LHC — •Jonas Anielski — Institut für Kernphysik, WWU Münster, Germany

Particle production in proton–nucleus collisions, in contrast to pp, is expected to be sensitive to cold nuclear effects. Measuring these effects in proton–nucleus collisions can be used to discriminate between initial and final state effects in heavy-ion collisions.

With the data recorded during a short p–Pb pilot run in September 2012 the charged-particle pseudorapidity density was measured over 4 units of pseudorapidity in non-single-diffractive (NSD) p-Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair √sNN = 5.02 TeV. The average value at midrapidity is measured to be 16.81 ± 0.71 (syst.).

By scaling this result with the number of participating nucleons the pseudorapidity density can be compared to other colliding systems and different energies. The obtained value of 2.14 ± 0.17 (syst.) per participating nucleon is 16% lower than in NSD pp collisions interpolated to the same collision energy, and 84% higher than in d–Au collisions at √sNN = 0.2 TeV. The measured pseudorapidity density in p–Pb collisions is compared to model predictions, and provides new constraints on the description of particle production in high-energy nuclear collisions.
