Study of wavelet-based methods for raw waveform analysis with XENON100 data — •Boris Bauermeister — Institute of Physics, Johannes Gutenberg-Universität, Mainz, Germany

The XENON Dark Matter experiment seeks to directly detect weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) through their interaction with xenon nuclei. XENON100 is a dual phase time projection chamber (TPC) with 162  kg of liquid xenon as target and shield material inside. The signals are read out by 178 photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) in the TPC. They are arranged in two arrays: The top and bottom array. 64 PMTs are used for the veto system.

Waveforms of 0.4  ms length are recorded for each PMT. Potential Dark Matter signals should contain one valid primary (S1) and one secondary (S2) scintillation signal in the summed waveform. A software identifies the S1 and S2 peaks within a waveform and determines parameters such as their positions and widths. To avoid misinterpreted peaks by the peak finder algorithm it is important to reject noisy waveforms and to reduce noise by applying signal filters. We report results from a study to employ wavelet denoising algorithms to XENON100 data.
