First results on proton-lead inelastic cross section measured by CMS — •Colin Baus, Igor Katkov, Ralf Ulrich, and Hauke Wöhrmann — Karlsruhe Institute of Technology

A specific class of peripheral proton-lead collisions will have similar properties with proton-nitrogen collisions in extensive air showers. This makes the upcoming proton-lead data taking indispensable for the tuning of interaction models used in simulations of cosmic ray air showers. In this context the forward physics analyses are the most relevant. The CMS forward detectors, HF at 3<η<5 and the overhauled CASTOR calorimeter at 5.2<η<6.6 will be complemented by the TOTEM tracking detectors T1 and T2. The acceptance ranges of the calorimeters and trackers are fully overlapping, which allows an unprecedented quality of data analysis at very high η.

The pilot run for proton-lead collisions at the LHC has been recorded by the CMS experiment in September 2012. About two million events at 5 TeV were taken. The data quality was excellent, however, the luminosity was not precisely determined. In the beginning of 2013 an estimated integrated luminosity of 830µb−1 will be delivered. Furthermore, the instantaneous luminosity will be optimised and accurately determined by the Van der Meer scan method.

In this contribution the first determination of the inelastic cross section for proton-lead at 5 TeV is presented. Moreover, an analysis of energy flow and ultra-peripheral collisions will be discussed.
