Measurement of the Z Forward-Backward Asymmetry at the ATLAS Detector with Electrons in the Final StateRegina Caputo, Stefan Tapprogge, and •Christoph Zimmermann — Institut für Physik, Johannes-Gutenberg-Universität Mainz

In the production and subsequent decay of Z bosons into electron-positron pairs at proton-proton colliders such as the LHC, an asymmetric angular distribution of the electron with respect to the incoming quark direction can be observed. This so-called forward-backward asymmetry allows a precision measurement of the weak mixing angle as well as the search for heavy, Z-like gauge bosons.

The ATLAS detector, located at CERN, was used to investigate proton-proton collisions at a center of mass energy of 7 TeV in 2011 and 8 TeV in 2012. While 4.9 fb−1 of data were collected in 2011, a more than fourfold increase was achieved in 2012. The analysis of these data samples requires detailed studies of possible systematic effects due to the detector response and the partonic structure of the proton. The present status of the analysis will be discussed, including the advanced methods to extract a value for the weak mixing angle.
