Direct stop production searches in 0 lepton final states with the ATLAS Detector — •Francesca C. Ungaro, Thomas Barber, Claudia Giuliani, and Iacopo Vivarelli — Albert-Ludwigs-Universitaet, Freiburg, Deutschland

Since the beginning of the LHC data taking, many efforts have been dedicated to Supersymmetry (SUSY) searches, one of the most promising theories extending the Standard Model.

The tightening exclusion limits set on the mass of squarks and gluinos creates some tension between the traditionally explored SUSY scenarios and the constraints coming from direct and indirect searches, especially in the mass range accessible to LHC.

The possibility that the third generation of squarks (stop and sbottom) are the lightest remains theoretically promising, and their production can be probed by ATLAS and CMS at the LHC.

In this contribution I will present the ongoing search for direct stop pair production, performed on the data collected by ATLAS during 2012 at a center of mass energy of √s = 8 TeV. I will focus on events containing large missing transverse energy, due to the presence in the final state of the lightest SUSY particle (LSP), no leptons and b-tagged jets, which probe stop masses in the range 500-700 GeV. I will discuss in particular the background estimation techniques, since understanding the backgrounds is a crucial requirement in a search for new physics phenomena.
