IV/CV measurements and high rate test for the CMS phase 1 pixel upgrade — •Matteo Centis Vignali, Erika Garutti, Johannes Haller, Tobias Lapsien, Jennifer Sibille, and Georg Steinbrück — Institut für Experimentalphysik, Hamburg

To cope with the LHC luminosity increase foreseen for the next years, the CMS pixel detector will undergo an upgrade process in 2016/2017. The upgraded detector will consist of four layers of hybrid pixel modules in the barrel region and three discs in the end caps. The fourth layer of this new detector, consisting of 700 modules including spares, will be built by German CMS groups. The infrastructure for mass production of detector modules is currently being set up.

In this talk the production steps necessary to build a CMS barrel pixel module are summarized as well as the tests that are implemented in order to assure a high quality of the modules. Particular emphasis is put on two tests performed at the beginning and at the end of the production chain, namely the IV/CV characterization of the silicon sensors and the high rate test.

In order to reject defective silicon sensors, their current and capacitance characteristics as a function of voltage are measured in the first steps of the production. This allows to save read out components and time during the assembly procedure.

Once the modules are completed they undergo several tests, including a high rate test designed to evaluate the buffering of the new digital read out chip at conditions similar to the LHC, corresponding to a particle flux of 150 MHz/cm2.
