Identification of Electrons with the Forward Calorimeters of the ATLAS DetectorFrank Ellinghaus, Stefan Tapprogge, and •Christoph Zimmermann — Institut für Physik, Johannes-Gutenberg-Universität Mainz

The standard electron identification of the ATLAS detector relies on the tracking system, which covers a range in pseudorapidity up to |η| = 2.5. An extension of the acceptance for electrons and positrons up to high pseudorapidities – from |η| = 2.5 to 4.9 – gives access to kinematic regions otherwise not available for analyses. Measurements, such as the forward-backward asymmetry in Z decays, the differential cross section of Z production or the production cross section of Z boson pairs, benefit greatly from this expansion. Since this region of the ATLAS detector is not instrumented with a tracking system, the identification of electrons and positrons depends on the ability to distinguish electromagnetic and hadronic showers in the forward calorimeters.

Detailed studies on the identification efficiency have been carried out, including studies of the effects of pile-up. For the data taken in 2012 new methods for the estimation of the identification efficiency as well as multivariate approaches to the electron identification have been investigated.
