Creating an interaction between single photons is a key step towards realizing a photonic quantum gate. In conventional optical materials nonlinearities are so weak that they become negligible on the single photon level. However, light pulses can be stored in cold atomic ensembles as atomic spin waves with high efficiency and converted back to light on demand [1]. Coherent interaction between spin waves can be introduced by collisions between ground-state atoms or by excitation to Rydberg states with a long-range interaction. We experimentally demonstrate that in a Bose-Einstein condensate of 87Rb s-wave scattering betweeen ground-state atoms is sufficiently strong to realize a classical AND gate for classical light pulses [2]. We show that the gate operation is phase coherent, an essential prerequisite for extensions to a quantum logic gate. We further report on experimental progress towards implementing interactions between single photons by using the long-range dipole-dipole interaction between Rydberg atoms.
