Magnetic and transport properties of the Heusler system Ni2−xMn1+xSn. — •Tina Fichtner, Guido Kreiner, Gerhard H. Fecher, Walter Schnelle, and Clauida Felser — Max-Planck-Institut für Chemische Physik fester Stoffe, Dresden

In the present work we have investigated a new series of polycrystalline alloys of the general composition Ni2−xMn1+xSn with x = 0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.8, 1. The alloys were obtained as single-phase materials by inductive melting of the elements and subsequent annealing at 700C. Ni2−xMn1+xSn crystallizes in the cubic Heusler structure, thus forming a solid solution series from Ni2MnSn to Mn2NiSn. The stochiometric Heusler compounds of this series show ferro- or ferrimagnetic order with Tc ranging from 346 to 550 K, respectively. The magnetic moment at 1.8 K decreases in the series from 4.1 µB to 2.3 µB. The cubic symmetry is stable from low to high temperature. Instead of building a non-cubic structure, a miscibility gap forms pointing out an entropic stabilization of the cubic phase. Here, we report on the magnetic and transport properties with respect to the chemical disorder.
