NMR-Investigations of Semicrystalline Polymers — •Ricardo Kurz and Kay Saalwächter — Martin-Luther Universität Halle-Wittenberg, Institut für Physik, Betty Heimann Straße 7, 06120 Halle (Saale)

The amorphous phase of chemically similar linear semicrystalline polymers (PEO and PCL, both made up of CH2 groups) has been studied by solid-state NMR. In contrast to PCL, PEO is well known to show a helical chain jump process within the crystalline region, the presence of which can affect the thickness of the crystalline lamellae and its distribution. A series of both systems with variable molecular weights has been investigated at different crystallization temperatures. Different 1H-based NMR techniques have been applied to characterize the microscopic properties of the polymers, i.e., the anisotropy of the chain dynamics in the amorphous phase as well as the phase composition. Depending on molecular weight and crystallization temperature, we revealed interesting differences in the behavior of the amorphous phases of PEO and PCL. The amorphous dynamics of PEO strongly depends on lamellar thickness, while the results obtained for PCL are more complex and indicate a less trivial but interesting correlation with the morphology.
