Colloidal systems are often regarded as macroscopic atomic systems since they allow a direct access to study matter on the kinetic level by means of video microscopy. When the particle number is low, less than thousand say, the system is said to be finite. Deriving physical properties of finite systems is always challenging, since usually thermodynamic quantities fail in the limit of low particle numbers. Moreover, volume effects and surface effects are always competing in small ensembles. In our contribution, we study colloidal clusters interacting via tunable magnetic dipole forces. The mode properties of these finite ensembles are derived using an Instantaneous Normal Mode (INM) technique [1]. So far, the INM technique has been successfully applied to dusty plasma clusters [2]. To calculate modes of the system, only instant cluster configurations are needed, thus allowing to use this approach even in overdamped situations. The effect of differently shaped confinements on the cluster dynamics will be discussed.
